Birmingham woman works to bring Ukrainian cuisineto grocery stores across the state.

At most grocery stores, it’s easy to find cultural cuisine from countries like China, India, Italy and Mexico but it’s Jenya Semenkova’s goal to make Ukrainian food just as commonplace.

That’s why Jenya, who lived in Ukraine until she was 20 years old, started the business Ptashka – bringing nalysnyky (Ukrainian crepes with fillings) to grocery stores throughout Michigan.

Ptashka’s savory crepe varieties: Mushroom and Cheese, Ricotta Cheese and Spinach, and Cabbage and White Beans.

Ptashka’s sweet crepe varieties:  Cherries and Vanilla Sauce, Apples and Vanilla Sauce and one that’s especially popular in Ukraine, Farmer’s Cheese and Raisins.

Ever since she was a little girl, Jenya enjoyed spending time in the kitchen with her mom, Galyna. So, after moving to Birmingham, MI., the mother and daughter began perusing hundreds of family recipes, and they were drawn to the recipe for Ukrainian crepes.
